Call of The Wild

The Event

Since its creation in 1978, the popularity of the Dakar Rally has grown stronger to the point today when it is the largest motor sporting event in the world, with over 150 million European viewers alone. But this unique event has always remained loyal to its founding values: a unique sporting competition, experienced by all, amateurs and professionals alike, as an extraordinary human adventure. The 2009 route follows some of the world's most testing yet breath-taking terrain from Argentina and Chile, where they come face to face with the driest desert, some of the tallest dunes on the planet and cross the Andes Mountains (twice), before returning to Buenos Aires, on day 15, for the finish.

On the morning of January 3rd 2009, 530 teams will take off from Buenos Aires: 230 motorbikes, 30 quads, 188 cars and 82 trucks, representing 49 nationalities, with less than 40 per cent on average making it to the finish each year, no-one's fate is guaranteed.

Excitingly, navigation has regained its status on the 2009 Dakar and can mean the difference between success and failure, triumph and disaster. This year competitors only have three sources of information: the hidden waypoints, the road-book and the direction followed, pushing racers to the limits of their endurance and survival capabilities. GPS is not allowed.

Our Adventure

Our adventure began on May 25th 2007, Team Chinook embarked on a 9 day, 10,000 km journey in our Dodge Ram ( our rally towing vehicle ) to Baja in Mexico. On the way we stopped for a few days and drove in the California Desert, to get a feel for driving on sand dunes. We attended a press release party for the Baja 500 and met with and discussed our entry with the Director of the Dakar, Etienne Lavigne, and the Head of Competitors Department, Frédéric Lequien. Both were very personable, supportive and encouraging. They encouraged us to tell this story in our application to the Dakar. They were so impressed that we drove from Canada to Mexico in 3 days, that they offered us VIP passes to the 2008 Dakar. Then we marveled at the Baja 500 vehicles displayed, and enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts and the traditional meal that was served.

When we went to the 2008 Dakar in Lisbon we were greeted with VIP passes which allowed us unlimited access behind the scenes, for 3 days we met other competitors, spoke with scruitneers while they inspected the vehicles and race officials who were very helpful. Unfortunately the race was postponed the day before it was due to start. We will compete in 2011.

The Preparation

We have been preparing intensely for this event for the past few years. Some say we have been preparing our whole lives. We are competing on the North American Rally circuit at the highest levels of competition. In 2008 we competed in 6 Regional and National rallies and in 2009 and 2010 will be competing in several National rallies.
